This program was initiated in 2010 on the suggestion of several of our veteran members who frequent the VA Hospital for appointments. During their visits they noticed many veterans travel extensive distances for several appointments on a given day or arrive via a veterans bus and are unable to leave the facility to eat. They suggested offering a sandwich and chips to veterans to "tide them over" through their scheduled appointments. Since then we have funded this program for two Sandwich Days per year, one in November near Veteran's Day and one in February for Valentine's Day. We also hold fund raisers throughout the year to fund at least two more Sandwich Days in months we do not have a Veterans Activity scheduled. Everyone who has participated in a Sandwich Day has requested to volunteer again.
This is an outstanding opportunity to demonstrate your appreciation for our veteran's service. This program is conducted during a week day, seving veterans from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the VAMC, 2201 N Broadwell Ave, Grand Island, NE and will be announced in Lodge meetings as well and on the Lodge Newsletter Calendar.
Many Elks are unable to participate in this program due to its timing on a weekday, but volunteers are always welcome in fund raising activities that supports this and other Lodge Veteran's Programs.
